BURNING
Annual leaf burning periods for the residents of the City of Mt. Vernon are March 1 through April 30 and October 1 through December 15. Leaves may be burned only on private property and not on public right-of-way, public streets nor sidewalks. Fires on blacktop or oiled streets can actually damage the street surface, as well as create a traffic hazard from smoke blowing across the street. Leaves are defined to include twigs, small branches, nuts and associated debris capable of being raked and necessarily and customarily burned with leaves.
Burning will be allowed only between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Fires must be attended at all times. The Public Works Department requests that residents not rake leaves into ditches and streets, nor burn in ditches, nor on streets.
Continental Waste will continue yard waste pickup through the first week of December. There is no limit to the number of bags or bundles that will be picked up. Yard waste shall include grass clippings, leaves, branches, brush, garden plants, flowers, weeds and other similar organic waste material accumulated as the result of cultivation and maintenance of lawns, shrubbery, trees, vines and gardens. Individual limbs or branches should not exceed 2 inches in diameter. Brush must be bundled, maximum of 35 pounds each, 3 feet in length and 1 foot in diameter. Plastic bags will not be allowed.
Taking fire alarms out of service for tests/repairs
On occasion, commercial occupancies need to take their fire alarm systems out of service to conduct tests and/or make repairs. To take a fire alarm out of service, call the Police Department at 618-242-2121. After testing/repairs are completed, please call the Police Department to put the fire alarm back in service.
