Water Maintenance:
The City of Mt. Vernon
has over 300 miles of water main to maintain and repair.
The City works with the Environmental Protection Agency to
provide high water quality and works to maintain high water distribution
standards. Public Utilities staff serve the community and strive
to keep consumer confidence high while maintaining high water standards in
accordance with the American
Water Works Association standards and the Illinois E.P.A.
Public Utilities staff
provide repairs to water distribution mains as needed because of water leaks, main
breaks, water meter repairs, fire hydrant repairs and valve
replacement and repairs.
Public Notices - Boil
Water Orders:
I.E.P.A. requires that
the City notify the Public of "boil water orders", and by law
the City is required to contact at least one newspaper or radio
station. The City of Mt.
Vernon Public Utilities Department notifies the following media:

Water Main
Replacement:
The City of Mt. Vernon
is continually
progressing forward with water main replacement for the City
water distribution lines as well as sewer main replacement.
The priority of water main replacement is focused on old cast iron mains
that are in need of repair.
Locating:
The Public Utilities
Department offers water and sewer
main locating for contractors who have a digging project. When
customer's dig, the phone number to contact J-U-L-I-E is

should call the City Public
Utilities Department for water, sewer and storm drain location
at
242-6850.
Sewer Maintenance:
The City of Mt. Vernon
has over 200 miles of sewer main. Repairs to sewer
mains, sewer cleaning, repairing of manholes, and sewer main
replacement are provided as needed.
