Got Questions About Electric Aggregation? We’ve Got Answers

You may have recently received an opt-out notice regarding Mt. Vernon's electric aggregation program and might be wondering why opt-out and not opt-in. Here's why:

The city's electric aggregation program pools together the community's electricity demand to negotiate lower rates from energy suppliers. By default, residents are enrolled unless they choose to opt out. This method helps ensure that we have a sufficient number of participants to achieve significant savings for all.

👉 Answers to some of the most frequently asked questions are below:

1️⃣ Why do I have to opt out instead of opting in?
Opting out helps keep participation levels high, which gives the City greater leverage when negotiating competitive electric rates. This bulk purchasing power is what makes the program effective.

2️⃣ What gives the City the authority to do this?
In 2013, Mt. Vernon voters approved a referendum allowing the City to negotiate an aggregate rate for electric supply on behalf of residents. This gives the City the legal authority to operate this program.

3️⃣ Is participation mandatory?
No. Participation is completely voluntary. Residents are automatically enrolled, but you may opt out at any time if you prefer to choose your own supplier.

📅 Please note: The new aggregation rate takes effect June 1, 2025.
Some residents are seeing a rate of about $0.08 on their current Ameren bill, while the current aggregation rate is around $0.09. Both Ameren’s and the aggregation program’s electric supply rates will increase beginning in June.
