Sign Permits

The City of Mt. Vernon has rules in place to make sure signs in our community are safe, attractive, and follow city guidelines. These rules apply to all signs within the city’s zoning area.

Do You Need a Permit?

You may need a permit to install a sign. Our staff will review your proposal before you install the sign.

How to Apply:

  • Complete and submit your application online
  • Or download your application and bring it to the Engineering and Inspections Office at City Hall

Tip: If you’re not sure whether your project requires a permit, contact the Building Inspector for help.

For full details, you can read the City of Mt. Vernon Sign Ordinance.

  • Public signs from government agencies or utilities (traffic, safety, facility)
  • Security/Warning signs (e.g., “No Trespassing” or “No Soliciting”)
  • Residential properties: One sign per street, no larger than 1 square foot
