Demolition Permits

If you plan to tear down (demolish) a building or structure in Mt. Vernon, you must get a Demolition Permit first. This helps make sure the work is done safely and follows city rules.

When Do You Need a Demolition Permit?

You need a demolition permit for many common items, including:

  • Houses
  • Mobile homes
  • Covered porches
  • Decks
  • Garages
  • Carports
  • Storage buildings or sheds
  • Commercial buildings

Note: Other items may also require a permit. If you’re not sure, contact the Engineering and Inspections Office.

You can apply in any of these ways:

Fees

Fees may be paid in person or by calling the Engineering and Inspections Office.

  • $5.00 - one story structure or miscellaneous items such as fences, pools, sheds, etc.
  • $10.00 - two story and above structures
