Fireworks Permits & Training

Firetruck with American Flag

Fireworks can be fun, but they also come with responsibilities. The City of Mt. Vernon works hard to make sure fireworks are enjoyed safely and legally. Here’s what you need to know about permits and training

Selling Fireworks in Mt. Vernon

If you plan to sell consumer fireworks in the city, you must first get a permit.

What You Need to Apply:

  • Completed application
  • Copy of your Illinois Retailers Occupation Tax Act certificate or registration
  • Full inventory of all the fireworks you plan to sell
  • Certificate of Insurance showing at least $1 million in general liability coverage
  • Written lease or permission letter from the property owner where the sales will take place
  • $1,000 cash deposit if you live outside of Jefferson County (returned after 30 days if no violations occur)
  • Non-refundable $25 permit fee

Once your application is complete and correct, the Fire Chief will review it. Permits are issued within 15 days and are valid until April 30 each year.

Please review the City of Mt. Vernon Fireworks Ordinance before applying.

Fireworks Safety Reminder for Everyone

Even if you’re not selling or seeking a permit, remember these tips to keep fireworks fun and safe at home:

  • Only use fireworks allowed in Mt. Vernon city limits
  • Always have water or a hose nearby
  • Never let children handle fireworks
  • Don’t relight fireworks that don’t go off
  • Be respectful of your neighbors and pets

Let’s celebrate safely and keep our community protected.
