Boil Water Orders

Boil water orders are issued when something happens that may make the water unsafe to drink. It does not mean the water is definitely unsafe—it’s a precaution to help protect public health.

Current and recently lifted boil water orders are listed in the table below. Each entry shows the affected location, the date the order was issued, and the date it was lifted. Notices remain on the table for a limited time after being lifted so residents can view recent updates.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a boil order mean?

The tap water may have germs that can cause illness. This usually happens because of equipment failure, broken or leaking pipes, or low water pressure.

Does a boil water order mean there is lead in the water?

No. Boil water orders are typically issued as a precaution due to events such as water main breaks, maintenance, or temporary loss of water pressure. They do not automatically indicate the presence of lead or other contamination.

The City of Mt. Vernon’s water is tested regularly and meets state and federal standards. Information about lead service lines and the City’s replacement program is available on the City’s Lead Service Lines page.

I have already drank the water. Will I get sick?

Most people will not get sick. If illness occurs, symptoms may resemble food poisoning (nausea, diarrhea, cramps, mild fever). If concerned, contact your healthcare provider.

How long will the boil order last?

Until lab testing confirms the water is safe again.

How do I boil water?

Bring tap water to a rolling boil for at least 5 minutes before use.

Can I wash my hands with this water?

Can I use my coffee maker, ice machine, or water/soda dispenser?

No. Do not use appliances connected to water lines. Most filters do not remove all germs. Use bottled or boiled water instead.

No. Use bottled or cooled, boiled water.

What about feeding my baby?

Mix formula with bottled or cooled, boiled water. Wash bottles with bottled or cooled, boiled water.
