Illinois Safe Haven Law

The City of Mt. Vernon’s fire stations, police station, and local hospitals are designated “safe places” under the Illinois Safe Haven Law. This law allows a parent to safely and anonymously give up a newborn baby who is 30 days old or younger without fear of legal consequences.

How It Works

  • A parent may bring the baby to any Mt. Vernon fire station, the police station, or a hospital
  • .Firefighters, police officers, or hospital staff will make sure the newborn receives immediate care.
  • The baby will then be taken to the nearest hospital for a health check and any medical attention needed.
  • Afterward, the adoption process will begin through child welfare services.

The entire process is private and confidential — no names, no questions.
