Yard Waste
Illinois state law does not allow leaves and other yard waste to be thrown in the regular garbage or taken to the landfill. Yard waste cannot be placed in plastic garbage bags or mixed with normal trash. Please also remember that leaf burning is only allowed during special leaf burning weeks in Mt. Vernon.
What is Yard Waste?
Yard waste includes things like:

Leaves
-
Twigs
-
Branches
-
Limbs smaller than 4 inches wide

Brush, logs, and Christmas trees
How to Set Out Yard Waste
You must place your yard waste in a reusable container or a paper or other biodegradable bag. The container or bag cannot be bigger than 30 gallons.
For sticks, branches, and twigs, you can bundle them together with string or twine. Bundles cannot be more than 3 feet long or weigh more than 35 pounds.
Pick-Up Schedule
Yard waste is picked up every week on Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday, based on your trash collection day.
