Mayor & City Council

Your Elected City Council

The Mt. Vernon City Council is made up of the Mayor and four Council Members, each elected to four-year staggered terms.
These are part-time positions — the Mayor earns $7,200 per year, and each Council Member earns $2,400 per year.

Councilmembers balance serving the community with their personal and professional lives while making important decisions about Mt. Vernon’s future.

The City Council works together to:

  • Set policy and long-term goals for the community

  • Approve budgets, ordinances, and major city projects

  • Appoint the City Manager, City Attorney, and City Clerk

  • Represent residents and ensure responsive city government

Meetings are held at 7:00 p.m. on the first and third Mondays of each month in City Hall’s Council Chamber. Meetings are open to the public and streamed live on the City of Mt. Vernon Facebook page.
