Parks and Recreation Program Assistant

Position Type: Part Time

Hours of Work: 8 a.m. - 5 p.m., may require evening and weekends, up to 1,000 hours annually

Salary: $17.00 per hour

Department: Parks Department

The position requires a valid Driver’s License. Applicants must be able to pass basic reading, and math test.  High School diploma or its equivalency is preferred. Candidates must be able to work various shifts, work independently, perform physically demanding work in various environments, and have exceptional customer service skills. No benefits. Applicants are subject to background checks and medical assessments, including drug screen.

Laborer

Position Type: Full Time

Hours of Work: 40 hours per week, 7 a.m. - 4 p.m., may require evening and weekends

Salary: $23.80 per hour and benefits w/CDL, $19.04 per hour no CDL and benefits

Department: Public Works

Applicants must demonstrate ability in the basic skills of carpentry, electrical, welding, plumbing, janitorial, mechanics, and lift 80 lbs. A CDL is required within 6 months of hire, training will be provided by the city. Telecommunicator

Position Type: Full time, required to work mainly nights, weekends, and holidays

Hours of Work: 40 hours per week

Salary: $23.40 an hour, holiday pay, 2.5% increase when EMD certified

Department: Police Department

Applicants are required to have good communication skills; clear speaking voice, free of speech impediments; ability to hear and distinguish voices on the radio traffic; ability to become certified as a LEADS operator; ability to obtain Emergency Medical Dispatch certification; ability to work efficiently in emergency situations; and ability to pass thorough background security check performed by Police Department personnel.  Applications on file less than one year will be considered. Pool Manager

Position Type: Seasonal

Hours of Work: Hours will vary, requires some evenings and weekends

Salary: Based on experience, starting rate $16.25

Department: Parks and Recreation Department

Closing Date: 5 pm February 6, 2026

Applicants must have prior pool management experience. Strong leadership skills mandatory with ability to supervise, train, and oversee staff. Assumes direct responsibility for the maintenance and operation of the filtration, sanitation, and overall safety of the facility.  Excellent organizational and communication skills, both written and verbal required. Must be proficient at balancing the money drawers and completing nightly deposits.

Water Park Guest Services

Position Type: Seasonal, Part Time

Hours of Work: Hours will vary per day and week, requires evening and weekends

Salary: $15.00

Department: Parks and Recreation Department

Closing Date: 5 pm February 6, 2026

Guest Services workers must be skillful in money handling, speaking with the guests in a friendly and professional manner and hold a food-handler certificate (available online for a $15 fee).  Your $15 will be reimbursed mid-summer. Subject to basic reading test, background checks and medical assessment with drug screen.

Lifeguard

Position Type: Seasonal, Part Time

Salary: $15.25

Lifeguards for the Mt. Vernon Aquatics Zoo must be certified through Star Guard (call the Parks office at 618-242-6890, if you are a new lifeguard or are interested in becoming a lifeguard).  The city will pay for you to become a Star Guard certified lifeguard. Subject to basic reading test, background checks and medical assessment with drug screen.
