Leaf & Tree Burning
The City of Mt. Vernon allows the outdoor burning of leaves during limited times of the year. Burning of natural tree debris, such as sticks, limbs, and small logs, is also permitted when done safely and in accordance with City guidelines.
These guidelines help protect air quality, reduce fire risks, and keep our community safe.

Important Rules to Follow
To keep everyone safe and comfortable:
- Burning may be stopped at any time if conditions are dry, windy, or unsafe (decision made by the Fire Chief).
- Leaves cannot be burned in streets, sidewalks, drainage ditches, or on someone else’s property without permission.
- A responsible adult (18 years or older) must attend the fire until it is completely out.
Only natural yard waste, such as leaves and tree debris, may be burned. Burning garbage, trash, building materials, or tires is not permitted.
For more details, see Ordinance Chapter 90, Section 90.08.
Burning of Tree Debris
In addition to seasonal leaf burning, residents may burn dead tree debris such as sticks, limbs, and small logs, provided it is done safely and in accordance with City guidelines.
Burning should take place in a fire pit, fire ring, outdoor fireplace, chiminea, or another area surrounded by non-combustible material. Fires must be attended at all times and may not exceed 6 feet by 6 feet in size.
Burning is not allowed during high winds or when a burn ban is in effect.
