Illinois Safe Haven Law
Mt. Vernon's Fire Stations, Police Station and Hospitals serve as "safe places" under the Illinois Safe Haven Law. This law allows parents to safely and anonymously give up their newborn baby within 30 days of birth.
How It Works
If a parent brings a newborn to a fire station or police station, the baby will be taken to the nearest hospital for a health check and medical care if needed. After that, the baby will enter the adoption process.
The whole process is private and anonymous — no questions asked.
