The City of Mt. Vernon works with Republic Services to provide trash and recycling for our community. This helps keep our neighborhoods clean and encourages everyone to recycle.

Services include:

  • Garbage pick-up
  • Recycling
  • Yard waste collection
  • Bulk item collection

Service Alerts

Republic Services offers an automated call system to let you know if there are delays due to weather or holidays.

To sign up, fill out the Republic Services Automated Notification Form and bring it to the Billing Services Department, or submit the form online.

General Guidelines

Holiday Collections

Trash will not be picked up on these holidays:

  • New Year’s Day

  • Memorial Day

  • Independence Day (4th of July)

  • Labor Day

  • Thanksgiving Day

  • Christmas Day

If your regular pick-up day falls on one of these holidays, your collection will be delayed by one day.
Example: If your pick-up day is Monday and Christmas Day falls on Monday, your trash will be collected on Tuesday instead.

Cart Storage

City rules say that trash and recycling carts:

  • Must be stored off the street and curbs

  • Must be on your private property

  • Should not be in a spot that is highly visible from the street

This helps keep our roads safe and neighborhoods looking nice.

Missed Pick Up and Other Issues

If your trash or recycling is missed, you need a new cart, or have other problems:
