Selling Fireworks in Mt. Vernon

In the city of Mt. Vernon a permit must be obtained to sell consumer fireworks.

What You Need to Apply:

  • Completed application
  • Copy of certificate or registration under the Illinois Retailers Occupation Tax Act
  • Complete inventory of all fireworks you plan to sell
  • Certificate of Insurance showing at least $1 million in general liability coverage
  • Written lease or permission letter from the property owner where the fireworks are to be sold
  • $1,000 cash deposit if you live outside of Jefferson County (returned after 30 days if no violations occur)

Once you have everything, submit your documents to the Mt. Vernon Fire Chief and pay the non-refundable $25.00 permit fee.

If everything is correct and follows city rules, a permit will be issued within 15 days. Permits are valid until April 30th each year.

Fireworks Safety Training

The Mt. Vernon Fire Department offers free fireworks safety training every June for anyone who wants to legally purchase, possess, or display 1.4G consumer fireworks, as required by Illinois law.

2025 Training Options:

  • In-person sessions
  • Online option available

The training covers:

  • State fireworks laws

  • Mt. Vernon city rules

  • How to safely handle and display fireworks

You must pass:

  • A safety test with a score of 100%

  • A fireworks knowledge test with at least 80%

Who Can Take the Training?

  • You must be at least 18 years old

  • You need a valid Driver’s License or State ID

Certification cards are valid through April 30, 2026.

  • Tuesday, June 3 – 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM

  • Thursday, June 5 – 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM

  • Tuesday, June 17 – 2:00 PM to 4:00 PM

  • Thursday, June 19 – 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM

  • Saturday, June 28 – 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM
